Opera has something for everyone. If you enjoy music, theatre, film, dance or the visual arts, you’re sure to find something you like in this amazing artform. Opera is passion, drama and high emotion – with a unique mix of fine music and captivating theatre.
Opera is total theatre
The beauty of opera is in the way it brings together several different art forms (music, drama, and visual arts) to make one incredible experience. Opera fuses a whole range of passions and themes: the triumph of love, love unrequited, hunger for wealth and power, unexpected joy, mortal envy, the corruption of innocence, unfaithfulness and political intrigue.
Opera's origins
Opera started in Italy during the Renaissance and the word comes from the Italian opera in musica meaning `a musical work.’ The very first opera Dafne (1597) was by Jacopo Peri and was a dramatic play. Over the last 400 years new operas have been created all over the world.
